Invitation

You presence is needed: Where will you be Saturday June 14th? If you don’t know its time to make plans to be in Seattle. We are having a joint birthday/MFA completion party for Mandy and me. I think both Mandy and I would prefer to not be the center of attention so with this plan we can both say the party is really for the other person. Let us know – it’s only a few weeks away.

Capitol Club frat party? So last week was the first nice Friday of the year and we tried to get out on the deck but there was a line of 14 people well before 5. Mandy noted that it looked a bit like the group should be at a frat/sorority party, not on Capitol Hill. They filled the outside so we went to 611. As we were leaving we ran into Terry and Rebbecca (Ann’s friends that you know) going to 611. Terry noted that stopped going to the Capitol Club. “It’s become a little frat party over there”, he said.
Then I get an email on Monday from a mother of a former student asking about the Capitol Club because she has thought about going and wanted to know if I knew the place.
So now we have frat boys, sorority girls and suburbanites. What's next, Republicans?!

What else? That’s about all I can think of. Other conversation has been somewhat sad, and/or serious and/or too personal to put up on the web. You’ll just have to get back here.

Question Answered: Do we watch the Kentucky Derby? No way, we only drink the appropriate cocktail for that weekend.

Babies, Babies Everywhere

Attendance: Robin and I
Drinks: Mint Julep (for the Kentucky Derby) for me, A Southside (another mint drink) for Robin

Well, last week Wendy and Mandy were involved with Opening Day boat stuff so they did not come out on Friday. Robin and I did venture to the 611 and spent an hour talking with Matt the bartender. We mostly got updates on his new married life (happy but trying to adjust to wife’s messiness and generally scattered nature) and a baby update. He is dreading the baby shower but is otherwise as ready as can be expected.

In other baby news:
We had Sean and Matt over for dinner last Saturday and they have a baby on the way too! Assuming all goes as expected they will be bringing the little one home from Oregon in October. (The deliver is in Oregon because of adoption laws that allow them to adopt as the sole parents before delivery.) They do not yet know the sex or if it is Sean or Matt’s the biological dad.

To go with the new kid they now have new home in Leshi near grandpa and grandma (Sean’s parents). It is a huge place, new construction with a lake view. They have lesbian neighbors – but, they joked, they like them anyway.

The menu included roast peppers, fried zucchini, eggplant rolotini, grilled halibut, seasoned mango, asparagus-fennel-arugula salad and a new Robin chocolate dessert.

(I am having a hard time proof reading as I listen to another Obama speach that I find inspiring.)
Answers: 1. Angelo is 18 2. yes, we are adorable 3. the class folks have yet to break into adolescent private part jokes, but when they do I am ready:
" Let all your crew pull strong, come what will.
There's hogsheads of sperm ahead, Mr. Stubb, and that's what ye came for. (Pull, my boys!) Sperm, sperm's the play! This at least is duty; duty and profit hand in hand!"

Drunken Christians

Attendance: us 4
Drinks: The 3 women went for Lemon Drops, me? Gins and Tonics

Question: Are the seats comfortable? The quick answer is no. In fact Wendy needs an extra session of yoga each week to compensate. But everything else is top quality – the service, the drinks, the noise level. Once you get back you can weigh in on the change. Though by that time it is likely we will back at the Capitol Club on the deck.

Conversation:
Counting time:
We figured out we have about 7 weeks until summer vacation and only 5 weeks until Mandy is all done with her master’s program.
Censored: I am realizing that decorum must allow this to be short post since much of the juicy parts of our conversation should not be put in print. But I think you got the gist of the dirt when you spoke with Robin on the phone.
Angelo: Some time was spent discussing Angelo’s living arrangements for next year (his own place? (his idea) full time with Robin? (not Robin’s idea) and his potential career as an event planner since he has put himself in charge of renting limos, book restaurants and dividing 40 senior prom goers into suitable groups. This is what he does instead of homework.
Indiana Governor: Speaking of the prom, we were reminded that Robin went to the senior prom with the now governor of Indiana. She is very embarrassed at having dated a Republican.
Moby Dick: Ann and I started our class.

"I stood looking at him a moment. For all his tattooings he was on the whole a clean, comely looking cannibal. What's all this fuss I have been making about, thought i to myself - the man's a human being just as I am: he has just as much reason to fear me, as I have to be afraid of him. Better sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian."

Happy Birthday Sarah and Vanessa

I know we are a little late on the birthday but your present is my trying hard to keep up with the blog these next 2 months.

So some quick updates:

Wendy and Mandy: They had a great time in NY over spring break seeing shows, hearing music and eating great food.
Wendy spent all of last Wednesday night at the vet with her cat and will spend the next week chasing down the cat and squiring medicine into her mouth as she tries to scratch at Wendy. We learned that cat’s can’t spit.
Mandy finished a 10 day seminar for her masters about 3 weeks ago where she received lots of feedback on her central writing project and is now in the final stages of revising it. After this quarter and a summer session she will have her MFA.

Jerry and Robin had a great time in San Francisco spending 3 nights in a lovely little hotel and 2 nights at Jerry’s friend’s house in the quaint, residential San Francisco neighborhood called Bernal Heights that felt oddly like a beach town.
Robin had pneumonia while San Francisco but didn’t know it until she returned. It didn’t slow her down in San Francisco but she did get her spring break extended by 2 weeks taking 5 days off and working half days the next 4. She’s fine now and no one who saw her believed she really had pneumonia. She may have just wanted an extended spring break.

Plumbing – the 4 of us missed you when we had a plumbing outing to Robin’s house. She has gotten a new marble slab in her bathroom and new sink and faucet. We needed to take out the old sink and counter. And by “we” I mean Mandy and Wendy. I cheered them on and helped carry the counter once Mandy and Wendy figured out how to undo the pipes going to the sink. We all knew you would have loved to be in on the action. We have pictures of Wendy with a giant wrench that looks like something out of Chaplin’s Modern Times. (That was my job, to make witty cultural references at Wendy worked.)

What else. . .
Ann and I are taking a class on Moby Dick at the Experimental College
We have grown to love our Friday new home at the 611
It snowed and hailed yesterday April 18th
I don’t like where the Democratic race has been going, with both Clinton and Obama getting higher negative ratings
Bill and Susan will be in Seattle late July and early August
And we would like you to be with us each Friday

Did I miss anything you have been wondering about?

Another Friday

Weather: We had a beautiful sunny week but soooo cold. And, for the first week time in months the sun was still out as we entered the Capitol Club!
Attendance: The Terrific Three – Robin was hosting a ‘woman’s dinner’ + Ann.
Drinks: Beers, Bourbon and Vodka.
Update: Mandy and Wendy decided to get the dinner with friend and bitch over with and cleverly chose a Monday knowing no one would want to stay out late, and they chose Bimbo’s thinking how bad can I feel when I’m in Bimbo’s?
Update 2: We felt a bit better at the Capitol Club under its new ownership this week. We had the better waitress (the one who looks and dresses like a cast member of Rent) and we felt a potential to be friendly with the new staff.
Conversation: A run down of crazy people at work. Mandy and Ann, as usual, had the best stories. We heard about the boat show Mandy and Wendy went too last weekend and about Steve getting ready to sail on their boat.

That’s all I’m remembering right now. I must have blocked out the rest of it being so distraught without Robin there -

Back to the Capitol

Weather: cold, cold, cold – but a tiny bit of light left as we walked to the Capitol Club.
Attendance: The 4 and special guest Allison, a 6th grade teacher at Jerry and Robin’s school
Drinks: Beers, vodkas, bourbons and gins.
The Venue: So, the owners of 1 year ago sold to another owner who took over last week. They have not changed the interior, which is good. They have cut down the happy hour menu of drinks, which is slightly bad. They now have a Spanish food menu which may be good or bad, and they have a whole new staff which sucks because we miss Amber and the regular bartender girl. Our new waitress was eager and bubbly, though slightly clueless about waitressing it seemed, and a second waitress was dressed like one of the cast members of Rent, Mandy pointed out. We are all still skeptical but relieved they didn’t mess things up with a bad re-model.
Dishin’ Dirt: Mandy posed a social dilemma that we really needed Sarah to solve. The long short: a bitch at work that is always a bitch to Mandy is somewhat friendly with another friendly friend at work, got me? The friendly friend wants the 4 of them: Wendy, Mandy, friendly friend and bitch woman to get together for dinner or something. Mandy not only does not like bitch woman but thinks she is a do nothing bad teacher and wants out. Always kind Wendy figures, hell I like going out to dinner, can’t be that bad. Allison became Mandy’s instant friend by telling her to ditch the bitch dinner and figure out a way to get her ass dumped as a teacher to save the students.
Allison told us of her own wish to ditch the ass of a teacher she is teaming with because he does nothing and is too mean to Allison. Mandy and Allison had a lot to bond over.
Your advise for Mandy?
If I Had a Hammer: We left the Capitol Club somewhat early so Mandy and Wendy could help Jerry hang a beautiful new (and first) piece of framed art. It is a gorgeous print of Edward Hopper’s “New York Movie” and it was expertly hung by Wendy and Mandy. Yes, I am too lame to hang a picture . . . which is not a surprise at all, is it?

You're Fired!

See Mandy's post below about last Friday - You get double vision this weel into the conversation. And Mandy remembered Jo's firing story better than I.

Week 2 at 611. Still great ambiance but Matt was on vacation.
Weather: another week of rain, rain, rain
Attendance: The Fantastic Four + Ann and introducing Jo (Wendy’s work friend)
Drinks: Beers for the Evergreen Jr. Crowd, Gimlets for Robin and Jerry and Fancy Bourbon Drink for Ann
You’re Fired: We each told stories of jobs we were fired from. Mandy’s sister and Jerry were both fired from being campus security people – Jerry for being caught twice at parties drinking will on duty. Robin was fired from a waitressing job for switching shifts without telling the power-mad manager. Jo was fired from a secretarial job at a car dealership after dealing with some insane costumer (I forgot the details). Ann was merely laid-off from a start-up in the early ‘00s. Mandy and Wendy have a clean record.
And you two? Any one fired?
Insane Siblings: We got onto this topic after Ann’s crazy stories about her sister’s visit. We all dubbed Mary’s crimes as outrageously rude, inconsiderate and immature – like talking on her cell phone constantly to her friends and making rude comments about the places Ann was going out of her way to take her and about Ann herself. Mandy sympathized having an occasionally equally self-indulgent, self-centered sister. And of course you know about my brother and Wendy’s sister. My guess is you both could have added much in the way of sibling material.

Next week – Return to the Capitol Club?

Belated Anniversary Edition Photos + special as-yet-unseen pix

Mandy in a boat. Yes, she tipped over and filled it with water, but look at that smile!!!!

Here is a mystery guest- not at Capitol Club, but in Port Townsend for a "Girls' Weekend!"

Yes, it's still dark out during our weekly rendezvous.
"Isn't Jerry cute and funny?"
Can you believe it's been 7 years? God, I need a drink.

1/11/08
Attendance: The Fantastic Four, plus Ann, and Jo (colleague of W & M)
Drinks: Beer for W, M, Jo. GIMLETS for Jerry and Robin. Ann had a tall, bourbon cocktail meant to wipe away the residue of her sister's toxic visit... "Hello? Yes, pretty much a bitch. Bitchy all the time... " Ann's thoughts: "I'm sitting right here!! I can hear you!!"
Conversation: Dan re-did his room, so now we sleep in there. Which brings me to the most important part-- We have a perfectly serviceable GUEST ROOM for post-welcome-home-party crashing. Let us know when we should schedule said Welcome Home Party.

Awesome story: Robin had an adventurously "fortified" coffee breakfast and gloriously corporate wine with lunch-- not on the weekend!
She has also been fired from a job (not teaching)!! So has Jerry AND Jo (who told her boss to F- Off)!! Mandy and Wendy are "goody-two-shoes" as it turns out.

Enjoy Yourselves!! We miss you!!

Call 6-1-1

Place: The 611 bar will be the Teachers’ Cocktails location until further notice. The Capitol Club is under reconstruction. Let us pray.
Weather: It’s Seattle. It’s January. Guess.
Attendance: The Fantastic Four
Drinks: Beers for Mandy and Wendy before running off to Marlin’s birthday, a fancy 611 bourbon cocktail for Robin and and Old Fashion for Jerry with Vanessa in mind. (Then Robin and Jerry stayed for one more to talk with Matt, their favorite bartender.)
Conversation: New Year’s recounts and watching the Space Needle fireworks go hay-wire, some talk about goofy students, wondering and jealously about you two in Paris, some talk about “The Catcher in the Rye” and some counting down until our next day off – MLK Day in January. Then Robin and Jerry talk for a long time with Matt the bartender who told us he was getting married.

Sarah: As of my posting time it looks like Clinton is going to win by 3 or so points in NH and McCain won pretty big over Romney with Huckabee pretty far back in 3rd. Wow! This election will make for some good drama!
